Çınar Eslek: Tack, Limb, Ilizarov

  • Depo Istanbul No.12 Lüleci Hendek Caddesi İstanbul, 34425 Türkiye (map)

Depo presents Çınar Eslek’s solo exhibition Tack, Limb, Ilizarov. The exhibition offers various propositions on the possibilities of the body, through questions of Hayal-Et (“Chimera-Flesh”), jointing and patching, diversity and hybridity, lack and completion.

Tack, Limb, Ilizarov is an organism consisting of densely stitched fabrics, sculptures made by adding found materials such as bones, concrete and porcelain to these fabrics, drawings on paper and videos that reveal keys to the exhibition. The fluid body constituting this exhibition attests to the ways people exist, are jointed and prosthetised with technique, and conceive of new potentials. Eslek challenges perceptions of normality and ossified notions of what is perfect through her monsters, who stem from her own bodily experiences, created by fusing the human, animal and plant worlds.

Often inspired by stories and the artist’s childhood memories, Eslek’s hybrid creatures exist on fabric, are one with their environment and indistinguishable from nature as well as enmeshed with materials that reference urban life, such as the concrete in her sculptures. This transitivity also manifests itself in the video made in collaboration with writer Bihter Sabanoğlu, where the architectural and ideological layers of Baltalimanı Hospital overlap with the artist’s own memories and diaries.

Tack, Limb, Ilizarov invites the viewer to reflect on the potential transformation of our existence by presenting possible scenarios of the end of anthropocentrism and becoming -animal, -earth and -machine.
