Maya Rochat — Poetry of the Earth

  • Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) 5/7 Rue de Fourcy Paris, IDF, 75004 France (map)

The MEP presents the first major institutional exhibition in France of the Swiss visual artist Maya Rochat. A remarkable experimental artist, Rochat has developed a singular formal language at the crossroads of several disciplines: photography, painting, video, installation and performance.

Maya Rochat creates visual montages with highly saturated colors in which natural motifs and abstract painting merge. Her photographs of plants, rocks or rivers serve as a starting point for her experimentation. She superimposes images, alters them digitally or physically and multiplies their use and meaning by playing on transparency, textures and colors. Artist's books, prints or light boxes, her multi-media works also go beyond the frame to unfold in space in the form of immersive installations and video projections.

Inspired by nature and its different shapes and scales, Maya Rochat engages in a poetic reflection on the beauty of the surrounding world, its matter and its transformation. She also questions the place that humans occupy in it by evoking not only chemical but also visual pollution, generated by the continuous flow of digital images. The artist invites the public to enter a dreamlike universe that offers a sensitive alternative to representations of a world in crisis, which she seeks to re-enchant.

The exhibition looks back over twelve years of Maya Rochat's artistic career, from her first works in the 2010s to her most recent project, “Poetry of the Earth” (2022). It offers a visual and sensory journey through a transdisciplinary work, in which the photographic image and video occupy an essential place.
