Cultivate: Homage to Carla Stellweg

  • Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo (map)

Carla Stellweg (Bandung, Indonesia, 1942) was one of the first independent curators in Mexico. The exhibition Cultivate is a tribute to the work of Stellweg, who has played an instrumental role in the development of the art scene in Mexico, specifically in its connection to international art. By bringing together archival material and the work of artists with whom she has collaborated, the exhibition explores different aspects of her career and centers her as a crucial agent who has cultivated seminal artists, platforms, and ideas in contemporary art.

The exhibition delves into Stellweg's career, which has been marked by his bold and independent nature. The show explores her beginnings as a collaborator with Fernando Gamboa on international projects such as Expo 67, the Venice Biennale, and many more; delves into her role as editor-in-chief of the first contemporary art magazine in Mexico Artes Visuales (1973-1981), which was a crucial device for connecting artists in Latin America; and shows less explored facets as a pioneer in addressing and thinking about issues such as feminism, Chicano art, and above all, as a link to the work of artists in Latin America, the Caribbean and living in New York.
