The Fragility of the Caryatid: Lucia Tallová

  • Rosenfeld Palace 28 J. M. Hurbana Žilina, Žilinský kraj, 010 01 Slovakia (map)

Lucie Tallová's solo exhibition projects images of a woman as a fragile caryatid in a total site-specific installation in the premises of the Rosenfeld Palace. Caryatids as sculptural elements of architecture served as pillars of ancient buildings.
They were usually depicted as standing figures and half-figures that seem to bear the weight of the entire structure on their heads or shoulders.

Today, the caryatid is a universal metaphor for a woman who feels burdened or tired by the expectations placed on her by society, family, relationships and the complexities of contemporary life. Tall's Unstable Monuments series is a tribute to women as caryatids, carrying on their shoulders the sometimes too demanding weight of responsibility for the running of an unstable, changing world.
