“This image was taken in 2018 while I was living in Mexico City, and marked a pivotal moment in understanding myself through conversation with the subjects I began to photograph. The camera, for me, became a mediating device, as the subjects became essential parts of my life. Is it easier to observe another body-mind, instead of observing one’s own? As a reflection on an archive, I can see now that each person—primarily womxn—was a crucial teacher. Each moment I recorded further weaves a constellation of imagery and fragments representative of both my psyche and the participants in unity.” – Zora Sicher

About the artist

Zora Sicher (b. 1995, New York) is an interdisciplinary artist/photographer from Brooklyn, New York City. Her practice predominantly explores the ever-changing presence of photography and the duality between its ancient processes and newfound ideas of digital image-making. Her current exploration conjoins image-making with poetry and video, creating sculptural pieces of work as installation. With a principal focus on the uncensored human body, she bridges the shifting terrain of photography, merging its identity as a means for reproduction to create slivers of truths that may not be replicable. After studying photography for two years at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Sicher left New York City in 2016 to study at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. She is currently based in New York City, and working on her first monograph of twelve years of photographic work set to be published in 2025.
